Fake doctor uses YouTube for surgery; teen dies in Bihar

Teen dies after fake doctor performs surgery using YouTube video in Bihar

Police are actively searching for an individual who allegedly posed as a doctor and used a YouTube video to perform surgery on a teenager, resulting in the youth’s death.

Krishna Kumar, known as Golu, was taken by his family to a private clinic in Sarah, Bihar, India, after he experienced severe stomach pain and vomiting. Although the vomiting subsided shortly after arriving, a ‘doctor’ insisted on surgery.

Krishna’s father, Chandan Sah, recounted to The Hindu, “My son had stomach pain, so we took him to the clinic.”

According to The Times of India, Krishna felt better after receiving medication, yet the ‘doctor’ pressed for immediate surgery to remove gallstones. Krishna’s grandfather mentioned that the ‘doctor’ dispatched the boy’s father to a petrol station for diesel, supposedly for hospital transport if needed.

During this time, the ‘doctor’ commenced the surgery without the family’s consent. Sah observed, “During the procedure, I saw the quack repeatedly checking YouTube on his mobile for guidance.”

The father reiterated to the Hindustan Times, “We just wanted the vomiting to stop. He performed the operation without our consent.”

Krishna’s condition worsened during the surgery. The ‘doctor’ attempted to transfer him to another hospital, but Krishna died en route. His father believes the ‘botched operation’ led to his death.

The family suspects the ‘doctor’ lacked legitimate qualifications. Dr. Santosh Kumar Singh, state secretary of the Indian Medical Association, called the incident “very unfortunate,” urging the health department to act against such impostors.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Isha Gupta informed The Hindu, “We have lodged a case against him and are conducting searches to arrest the accused. Further investigation is ongoing.”

This isn’t the first instance of a fake doctor causing patient deaths. In 2022, a 51-year-old woman was convicted of forging a license to work as an anesthesiologist, leading to the death of three patients and serious harm to others. She received a life sentence for three counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder.
