Jack Draper reaches first grand slam semi-final at US Open

Draper beats de Minaur, to face Sinner or Medvedev in semi-finals

Jack Draper has advanced to his first grand slam semi-final by defeating Australian Alex de Minaur at the US Open. Draper triumphed over the 10th seed with a commanding score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-2. He will compete against either top seed Jannik Sinner or 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals.

Draper is now the fourth British man in the Open era to reach the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows. The 22-year-old has yet to lose a set in the current tournament. After his quarter-final win, the 25th seed expressed his excitement: “It’s amazing. To play my first match on the biggest court in the world is a dream come true. It means the world.”

The British men’s number one reflected on his performance: “I think I played a solid match. My fitness is the best it has been in a long time, and that has made a difference against Alex in the past. He may have been struggling with something today, which could have helped me a bit.”

Draper praised de Minaur, calling him “an amazing fighter and an unbelievable player,” and predicted they would have many more battles in the future. Draper is the first British man to reach the US Open semi-finals since Andy Murray’s victory in 2012.

For de Minaur, who dates British women’s number one Katie Boulter, this marks another grand slam quarter-final defeat, with injuries appearing to affect his performance. This is his third consecutive grand slam quarter-final loss.

Draper has established himself as the new star of British tennis, stepping into the spotlight following Andy Murray’s retirement earlier this year.
