Retired vicar, wife killed in tragic Beaumaris car crash

Retired vicar and wife struck by ex-businessman's car at historic pier

A retired vicar and his wife lost their lives in a tragic car accident involving a former businessman, who also perished in the crash, an inquest revealed. Reverend Stephen Burch and his wife, Katherine, a charity worker, were struck by 81-year-old Humphrey Pickering near a historic pier during their walk.

The couple had been enjoying a day out in Beaumaris, Anglesey when Mr Pickering, who had driven 30 miles from his home, collided with them. Despite the efforts of bystanders and emergency services, the couple was pronounced dead at the scene in Beaumaris, Anglesey.

Mr Pickering also succumbed to chest injuries at the scene, the inquest heard. Pickering, a former director of a library computer company, had retired nearly 20 years ago and settled on the Welsh coast.

The inquest, which commenced today, heard from coroner Kate Robertson: ‘A motor vehicle driven by Humphrey Pickering along Alma Street in Beaumaris collided with pedestrians Katherine and Stephen Burch, subsequently hitting a property. All three died at the scene.’

Investigations into the accident are ongoing, leading to the adjournment of the inquest to allow further inquiries. She extended her condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and acknowledged the efforts of the public and emergency responders at the scene.

Mr and Mrs Burch, residents of Alcester in Warwickshire, were remembered by the Diocese of Coventry, which paid tribute to their community contributions. The diocese expressed shock at the news, noting that Steve had recently retired after 35 years of service, most recently as vicar of St James, Fletchamstead. Katherine was also well-regarded for her work with the Church Pastoral Aid Society and worship ministry.

The couple remained active in retirement, running an alpha course that led to baptisms and confirmations. The diocese extended thoughts and prayers to their children, David, Jonathan, and Sarah, during this difficult time. An eyewitness from a nearby hotel described hearing ‘loud bangs’ and seeing bystanders attempting CPR.

The witness remarked on the beauty of the town, noting its popularity with tourists and the frequent foot traffic in the area.
