A boat carrying nine people collided with a break wall at high speed near Harbor One Marina in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, according to Joey Kellems, lead command centre controller with the US Coast Guard’s Long Island Sound sector. The impact shattered the boat, throwing all passengers into the water, Kellems reported Monday night.
Six individuals were rescued, but search teams have yet to locate the remaining three, who were without life jackets, Kellems added. Information on the exact timing and circumstances of the crash was not immediately disclosed.
The Coast Guard deployed both air and water support for the search. Additional search and rescue teams from mutual aid agencies were also involved. Old Saybrook, a coastal town, lies approximately 30 miles east of New Haven, Connecticut. Updates will follow as the situation develops.
