Police find ex-roommate's remains buried under backyard fire pit

A man from Orangeburg, South Carolina, faces murder charges after police found the remains of his former roommate buried under a fire pit in his backyard.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department reported that 54-year-old Sheridan Dirk Fogle was arrested on Thursday for the murder of 51-year-old Penni Whiteside.

Authorities, including the U.S. Marshals Service and the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, executed an arrest warrant at Fogle’s Broughton Street home at approximately 7:30 a.m. The investigation started on May 11, 2022, as a missing person and murder case.

The Horry County Coroner’s office confirmed that Whiteside’s remains were found buried outside her home on 1st Avenue in Myrtle Beach on June 12. Whiteside was last seen in spring 2022 and was 51 years old. The Myrtle Beach Police Department is treating the case as a homicide.

Police revealed that both Whiteside and Fogle lived together in 2022. Neighbours suggested that Whiteside might be buried in the backyard under a fire pit, leading investigators to obtain a search warrant for the property on 1st Avenue South.

During the search on June 12, 2024, police discovered human remains later identified as Whiteside.

The Myrtle Beach Police described the incident as a “tragic loss of life and a senseless crime of violence” in a Facebook post, urging the public to pray for Whiteside’s family and friends.
