49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall survives San Francisco shooting

Rookie Ricky Pearsall shot in Union Square robbery attempt, now recovering

San Francisco 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall, who was shot during a daylight attempted robbery in Union Square, San Francisco, was discharged from the hospital on Sunday. Both his mother and the 49ers described him as “extremely lucky” to be alive.

The 49ers stated that Pearsall, aged 23, “sustained a bullet wound to his chest.” He was released from Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital on Sunday afternoon and is continuing his recovery.

The team extended their gratitude to the San Francisco Police Department, emergency medical services, and the medical staff at San Francisco General Hospital in a statement posted on X.

Erin Pearsall, Ricky’s mother, expressed her thanks on Facebook, attributing her son’s survival to divine protection. She mentioned that the bullet exited through his back, missing vital organs.

Police responded to a shooting report shortly before 4 p.m. local time on Saturday and found two men injured. The San Francisco Police Department indicated that a physical altercation during an attempted robbery led to injuries for both the suspect and the victim.

Preliminary details suggest Pearsall was targeted for his Rolex watch. He was not identified as a football player during the incident.

Police apprehended a 17-year-old suspect from Tracy, California. Charges are pending, and the investigation is ongoing, according to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott.

Scott emphasized the city’s zero-tolerance stance on such violence and pledged to collaborate with District Attorney Brooke Jenkins to ensure justice. Scott mentioned that the suspect acted alone, though this could change with new evidence.

Jenkins stated that charging decisions would be made by mid-next week, with charges filed in juvenile court due to the suspect’s age.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed called the incident “terrible and rare.”

Pearsall, a first-round draft pick, had recently resumed practice after a shoulder injury in the preseason. Erin Pearsall, in her Facebook post, urged people to cherish life and love one another, thanking divine grace for her son’s survival.

ABC News’ Erica Morris and Bill Hutchinson contributed to this report.
