Phuket to send plants to Jubilee flower show

PHUKET: Phuket is preparing to send four kinds of plants to display at the Royal Flora Ratchapruek 2006 flower show, to be held in Chiang Mai from November 1 to January 31 next year as part of celebrations to mark HM The King’s Diamond Jubilee.

Phuket will send a Phuket pineapple plant as well as a lang khao palm – the white palm is unique to Phuket – a khon tee sor tree and a wua lai betel palm.

The plants will be on display from December 1 to 10. Phuket will also send a selection of batik cloth and prepare 12 stage shows to be performed between December 1 and 15.

The government is encouraging every province to prepare displays for the event.

Tassanee Sawasdirak, Head of the Phuket Provincial Agriculture Office, told the Gazette, “Phuket pineapples aren’t the same as other pineapples in the world; they have a delicious sweet-and-sour taste. Foreigners, especially, love the sour edge of our pineapples.”

Tickets for a special package including entrance to the flower show and trips to other attractions in the Chiang Mai area are available for the special price of 500 baht from the PR counter at Central Festival Phuket.
