Pattaya thief steals gold ring and cash from Swedish man

A late-night walk turned into a costly escapade for a Swedish holidaymaker in Pattaya when a brazen thief made off with valuables worth 42,000 baht.

The tourist from Sweden, 65 year old Lars Reikwike, reported the theft to police around 3.30am today, November 27, near Pattaya City 8 School. According to Reikwike, a stranger approached him and managed to swipe a gold ring valued at 40,000 baht and an additional 2,000 baht in cash.

Local motorcycle taxi driver, 50 year old Winai who witnessed the incident, claimed the Swedish tourist appeared to be intoxicated and was waiting for a taxi. Winai said the suspect, described as someone who “appeared to be transsexual,” approached the foreigner, seemingly with ulterior motives.

“I tried to intervene to stop anything from happening.”

Despite the motorbike taxi driver’s efforts, the thief made his move. By the time the crime was discovered, the suspect had already vanished.

Winai added that the individual was no stranger to the area, hinting he might be a repeat offender.

Police are investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made yet. Tourists visiting Pattaya are reminded to stay vigilant, especially in the early hours. Officers have urged residents to report any suspicious individuals frequenting public spaces, reported Bangkok Post.

The suspect, who removed his shoes before entering a shop to commit the crime, was caught while attempting to flee to northern Thailand with the stolen goods intended to finance an engagement.

A 32 year old man originally from Roi Et was arrested after committing a robbery at a gold shop in Samut Sakhon. Wearing a black hooded jacket and a black face mask, he approached the shop located near Wat Ketumdee Sri Wararam, Bang Thorat, and made away with two gold necklaces, each weighing two baht, valued at 171,600 baht (US$4,900).
