    by Jessada Chantharak

A 29 year old South Korean man, wanted for alleged involvement in an online gambling operation in his home country, has been arrested in Chon Buri. Police allege he had been “laying low” in Thailand for two years.

The man was wanted under a Seoul Central District Court arrest warrant issued on May 2, 2017, and by Interpol over the allegation that he joined with accomplices to operate the online gambling business. Thai police officers revoked the suspect’s visa and detained him pending further investigation. They are also awaiting a court decision on whether to deport him to South Korea.

Chon Buri Immigration Police also announced that they had arrested six people wanted under Pattaya Provincial Court arrest warrants for six separate crimes.

On July 30, a 34 year old Nigerian man wanted for allegedly possessing methamphetamine and overstaying his visa was arrested at Phuket Airport. The man had reportedly jumped bail in the drug-possession case and fled Thailand before changing his passport and trying to re-enter the country, but a biometrics scan exposed him as a fugitive.

On August 1, a 46 year old Chinese man, wanted for alleged theft after stealing his former landlord’s furniture out of the house he was renting in Pattaya, was arrested outside a condo in the Bang Lamung district.

Four other suspects were Thai fugitives…

    • a 31 year old hilltribe was man arrested in Bang Lamung on July 26 for jumping bail in an alleged fraud case.

    • a 37 year old Thai woman, wanted on a drug-related charge, was arrested in Rayong province.

  • Hong Kong protesters defy China’s warnings with more rallies

Hong Kong protesters defy China’s warnings with more rallies

Anti-government protesters kicked off another mass rally yesterday as they defy increasingly stern warnings from China over the unrest that has plunged the city into crisis.

The semi-autonomous Chinese financial hub has seen two months of protests and clashes triggered by opposition to a planned extradition law. Emboldened by the early win for the proposed extradition laws to be withdrawn, the protesters have ramped up the protests to target other democratic reform.

Authorities in Hong Kong and Beijing this week signalled a hardening stance, including the arrests of dozens of protesters, and the Chinese military saying it was ready to quell the “intolerable” unrest if invited by HK authorities.

But protesters have remained unyielding, vowing to hold multiple rallies and marches throughout the weekend and into next week.

Thousands of protesters filled a park in the densely populated neighbourhood of Mongkok, which has previously seen clashes between police and demonstrators, listening to speeches and shouting slogans.

Police initially denied activists permission to march through the neighbourhood but later allowed it after an appeal.

Two marches are also planned for today — one on Hong Kong island and the other in the Tseung Kwan O district — as well as a city-wide strike on Monday and rallies in seven other locations. The call for strike action appears to be gaining more traction than previous walkouts, with a host of organisations and unions vowing to join.

Hong Kong has now witnessed eight consecutive weekends of huge rallies often followed by violent clashes between police and small groups of hardcore protesters.

Under the terms of the 1997 handover deal, the city has rights and liberties unseen on the mainland, including an independent judiciary and freedom of speech.

3 Bangkok students arrested in connection with yesterday’s bomb blasts

Three Bangkok technical students have been arrested this morning (Saturday) as part of the investigation into the four explosive devices planted in bushes in the middle of Rama 9 Soi 57/1 yesterday. The students were aged 15, 16 and 17.

Thai PBS report that the suspects have confessed during initial questioning at Huamark Police Station.

The police plant to question the suspects further when all parties required to be present for the questioning of minors are present, including psychologists and social workers.

Police have reviewed CCTV footage in the hunt for suspects in the Chaeng Wattana Government Complex explosions. Initially, the police say they have indentified two men who they want to question and are now trying to locate them. There were four explosions at the complex yesterday morning.

“I condemn the mastermind behind this morning’s bomb blasts, which destroy people and the country’s image. I have asked officials to beef up security for members of the public and take urgent care of those affected by the explosions.’’ – Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-cha

The multiple bombs have gone off this morning around Bangkok as the ASEAN Summit, running this week, hosts Foreign Ministers and officials from the ASEAN bloc. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is also in town.

This is the latest we know about the sequence of explosions around Bangkok this morning HERE.

Meanwhile, two suspects have been apprehended and arrested after they dropped off a suspicious object outside the Royal Thai Police HQ on Rama I Road in Bangkok last night. They were arrested at the Pathomporn checkpoint on Phetchakasem Road travelling on a bus, heading to Chumpon early this morning around 2am. At this stage they have denied involvement in the fake bomb incident.

Bomb disposal experts were called to the area. The object contained two cylinder-shaped boxes stuffed with electrical circuit boards. There was no explosive. A roadblock was lifted an hour later.

Police examined CCTV footage. Police say the first man was watching the area nearby while the other man was seen dropping the suspicious object at the fence at the front of the RTP HQ. The man who placed the item was wearing a yellow shirt with black trousers, a cap and black sneakers with a mask and was holding a backpack. Police cannot confirm whether there’s a link between this incident and the other bombs that exploded around Bangkok this morning or not.

The two were later seen on CCTV meeting at the skywalk near the Siam BTS station before heading into Siam Paragon shopping centre where they changed clothes.

They then travelled by taxi to Chatuchak park to catch a bus, southbound. Police say the pair changed clothes again in a toilet at the bus station.

    UPDATE

The two injured persons from the Rama 9 Soi 57/1 incident, bothstreet cleaners from Suan Luang District Office, were sent to Sirindhorn Hospital. They told the police that they were removing grass from the roadside when they found an object wrapped in black tape. They touched it and it exploded.

Police believe that it was ‘Ping Pong bomb’. Also, they found a pen gun and two knives hidden in the dense grass in the same area so they have blocked the area for further investigation.

  • National police chief is going to war with street racers

National police chief is going to war with street racers

PHOTO: The almost weekly crackdown on motorcycle street racing around Bangkok. So far measures haven’t worked to curb the activities of the fast & furious Bangkok youth – Bangkok Post

Despite weekly reports about late night weekend street racing around parts of Bangkok, and the sophisticated use of social media to promote the events, the national police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda is vowing to make motorcycle racing “extinct” in Thailand.

The police say they are also rolling out several road-safety measures, including painting 3D zebra crossings in high-risk areas as well as on main roads near schools. The first 3D zebra crossing is being painted near the state-owned Bodindecha high-school in Bangkok and will be ready for use by August 6. (How the police chief thinks 3D road crossings are a ‘road safety measure’ was not explained).

As for street racing, the police chief said the entire ‘food chain’ will be monitored – from shops that sell race-related equipment and provide modification services for motorcycles, up to taking legal action against administrators of social-media pages that encourage racing or arrange racing events. He is also going to target parents and guardians who fail to keep their children “in check”.

Pol General Chakthip also vowed to penalise chiefs of Bangkok police stations who are found to have not heeded his orders. Local metropolitan police will be encouraged to take pre-emptive action by preventing races from taking place through intelligence and online surveillance, and also seizing motorcycles or vehicles owned by the racers or spectators.

Chakthip warned that these measures will be strictly implemented over the next five months to force racers or organisers of races to stop. Meanwhile, deputy police chief Pol Lt-General Damrongsak Kittipraphas said the 3-D zebra crossings are expected to help reduce accidents and road casualties (how?!) and will be painted near all schools in Bangkok.
