Australian man dies after falling from staircase at Phuket hotel

Alcohol-fuelled holiday ends in tragedy just hours before checkout

An Australian man fell to his death from a staircase at a hotel in Phuket on May 1, allegedly due to intoxication, in full view of his wife.

Officers from Patong Police Station and rescuers from the Kusontham Foundation rushed to a hotel on Rat Uthit 200 Years Road in the Kathu district of Phuket after being alerted to an incident on the B floor.

Upon arrival, they found a foreign man lying face down and struggling to breathe near the hotel’s car park entrance. A significant amount of blood had flowed from his head.

The man was later identified as a 59 year old Australian national, Sean Christopher Collins. The rescue team administered CPR before rushing him to Patong Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Hotel staff informed officers that Collins and his wife had checked into a room on the third floor on April 29 and were scheduled to check out on May 2.

On the night of the incident, the couple reportedly returned to the hotel at around 1am. Hotel employees said they heard a loud noise approximately five minutes after the couple passed the reception desk.

Collins’s wife, whose identity remains undisclosed, told police that the two had been drinking and were returning to their room when the accident occurred. Collins walked ahead and reached the second floor of the staircase while she was still on the first floor.

She said she noticed her husband staggering due to intoxication before he fell from the second floor to the B floor.

In a similar case reported three weeks earlier, an American man died at a hotel on Phang Nga Road in Phuket after heavy drinking. The man had reportedly been travelling in Thailand with his Burmese girlfriend but consumed alcohol with friends before the incident.

The American man arrived back at the hotel at around 4.30am and began vomiting. His condition deteriorated, prompting his girlfriend to call for medical assistance, but he could not be saved.
