A TikTok personality, known as @tdploy, recently introduced her followers to an unusual dish, Golden Orb Spider from her native region.

The dish, Golden Orb Spider (แมงย่างซี้น), prepared from a large spider indigenous to Thailand, sparked curiosity amongst her online community yesterday (November 17). Despite the creepy appearance, @tdploy assures that its taste is surprisingly delicious.

Nestled within the forest, @tdploy captured the process of hunting, capturing, and cooking the Golden Orb Spider. She walked her followers through the process: locating the spider’s nest with a stick, extracting the spider, washing it thoroughly, and finally, cooking it with salt, chilli, and garlic. She added a little water and then heated it until it was aromatic.

She assures her followers that despite the spider’s odd appearance, its flavour is crispy and delicious. Following the post, numerous comments flooded in, with many who were familiar with the dish and others curious whether it was genuinely edible.

According to the website Esaan108, the Golden Orb Spider is a large spider possessing a body length of 5 centimetres and a width of 2 to 3 centimetres. Its leg span can reach up to 10 centimetres. The Golden Orb Spider is yellow-patterned with speckled sides. Two species can be found in the northeastern part of Thailand, namely, the Yellow Golden Orb and the Black Yellow Spot.

The former is yellowish with two yellow stripes along its back, while the latter has a single yellow spot, arranged longitudinally on its black-toned body. This species is typically found in dense forests with little sunlight, reported KhaoSod.

@tdploy posted on TikTok, showing her experience with the spider, from hunting to cooking and eating.

“@tdploy is back again with our spider-eating adventure. Sorry for the long absence. #tdploy #HelpFollowThisHillTribeGirl #CapCut”

Despite the intimidating look, she insists that the spider tastes crunchy and delicious. The post has since garnered a lot of attention, with many expressing their curiosity and others sharing their own experience of eating the Golden Orb Spider.
