Elderly couple’s tragic motorcycle accident in Udon Thani
A tragic accident unfolded in Udon Thani, where an elderly couple riding a motorcycle with a sidecar from Nakhon Phanom to Nong Bua Lam Phu was struck by a six-wheeled truck, resulting in one fatality and another person seriously injured. Police are actively searching for the truck driver who fled the scene following the incident.
The accident was reported yesterday, December 24, to Chanont Sonachot, a deputy inspector of Udon Thani City Police Station. Upon receiving the report, emergency responders swiftly arrived at the incident location on Nittayo Road, leading into Udon Thani city, opposite the Thai Siri Market in the Ban Khai Seni 2 community.
At the scene, police found 62 year old Somporn Thubthamat, who had tragically passed away with both of his lower legs fractured. Rescuers attempted CPR but were unsuccessful in reviving him.
Nearby, a severely injured woman, presumed to be his wife, was found; she was immediately transported to Udon Thani Central Hospital for urgent medical attention.
A short distance away, the couple’s blue Honda Wave motorcycle with a sidecar was discovered severely damaged. Inside the vehicle, police found a suitcase, a wallet containing 4,120 baht (US$120), and six lottery tickets dated for a draw on January 2, 2025.
A witness, described as a good Samaritan, recounted that the elderly couple was travelling from Nakhon Phanom to Nong Bua Lam Phu, a distance of nearly 200 kilometres. Suddenly, a six-wheeled stone-carrying truck cut in front of the sidecar motorcycle abruptly, causing the couple to crash as they were unable to brake in time.
The truck then fled the scene, leaving behind a grim situation, reported KhaoSod.
“It’s heartbreaking to think of how far the elderly couple travelled, only to face such a tragic end in Udon Thani, not reaching their destination,” the witness remarked.
The police are now intensively investigating the incident, examining the accident scene to gather evidence and reviewing CCTV footage to locate and prosecute the truck driver responsible for the hit-and-run.
