Basic Information for Thailand’s Visa & Work Permits
Visas are generally issued by Thai Embassies and Consulates for your travel and stay in Thailand. Visas are typically valid for 3, 6, or 12 months and are when you can enter Thailand. On arrival at one of Thailand’s Immigration checkpoints, the entry clearance officer will grant you a period of stay subject to the Visa type being used. (Know as your permission of stay). Visa validity is the period during which a visa may be used to enter Thailand. On the other hand, the “permission to stay” is granted by an Immigration officer on entry. To legally work in Thailand you need the correct Visa type to apply for a work permit.

FAQ
1. What should I do if I want to stay longer in Thailand?
You can extend your permission of stay granted upon entry at a local Immigration office in Thailand. The periods of extensions are subject to the method or Visa type used to enter Thailand. The extensions are issued depending on the reason for the extension application and may be subject to meeting immigration financial requirements. Typically extensions may be granted for 30, 60, 90 or 365 days depending on the reasons.
2. What documents are required to get a Visa?
First, you need to check with your local Thai Embassy website and choose the correct Visa type for your reason to travel to Thailand. The availability of Visa types can vary from Country to Country.
The most commonly requested documents are:
- Your passport or travel document (with a validity not less than 6 months from the date of application).
- Completed your visa application.
- A photo ( 4×6 sized)
- Proof of your flight tickets
- Proof of financial resources
- Proof of accommodation in Thailand.
- The Visa fee
3. What documents are required to get a Work Permit?
To apply for a Work Permit, a foreign national must already be on a Non-Immigrant type Visa or an extension of stay which permits the applicant to work, such as a Non-Immigrant O Visa (for the reason of Thai Spouse), Permanent Residence Visa, Non-Immigrant B Visa, or another type of Non-Immigrant O Visa permitting work. A foreign national cannot apply for a Thai Work Permit while on a Tourist Visa. A foreign national is only eligible to apply for a work permit as long as they have a formal job offer and an employer who can provide all the required documents for a work permit. The job offer must also be for a role or occupation which is not prohibited to foreigners.
The most common specific documents needed:
- Original passport
- A copy of your Non-immigrant visa page, the latest entry page, and biodata page
- 3 passport-sized photos (4 x 6 cm)
- A copy of all related degrees/qualifications
- A copy of any relevant transcripts, certificates or licenses
- A copy of your CV should describe in detail your past positions and all previous employment length and location
- A medical certificate not older than six months from a recognised hospital in Thailand. It must state the applicant’s blood type and confirm that the applicant is of good mental and physical health (not suffering from leprosy, acute tuberculosis, elephantiasis, narcotic addiction or alcoholism).)
- A proxy to the person who is applying (other than the applicant himself), including a 10 THB duty stamp
- If you are married to a Thai national you must supply a copy and original of your Marriage Certificate. All copies must be signed by you.
- Some documents may need to be certified by your country’s embassy, to be declared correct or original documents, (this can be done at your national embassy in Bangkok but may require you to pay an authentication fee). You may also be required to translate your documents into the Thai language.

4. How long does it take to get a Thai Visa?
Applications for an extension of stay from a local Immigration office in Thailand can be issued the same day, but they may have to be placed under consideration for up to 5-6 weeks. You need to meet the documentation and financial requirements, and you must apply before the current visa expires. The process can be complex, so it is advisable to prepare all necessary documents in advance. This is important because missing paperwork can lead to delays or even denial of the extension request.
