The search is on for a 53 year old Russian tourist who disappeared from her hotel in Phuket. The Russian woman was staying in a hotel in the Thalang district on the island. Police received notification yesterday that she had gone missing and had not been seen since the evening before. Last seen Thursday eve?  In the U.S. no one even starts looking until 48 hours "missing".

Did she come alone?  Was she still a guest at that hotel?  Were all her belongings in the room?  Who told police that this young 53 year old had "memory issues"?  Did a Russian friend of hers tell the police this? 

These news reports give so little information...why is that?

I agree. Sadly I think the answer is simple. No such thing as investigative journalism in Thailand. To ask is to risk upsetting people, leading to defamation, leading to imprisonment. Head down and mouth shut is they way to stay alive in The Land of Smiles.
