A Thai singer crashed his Volvo S90 sedan into a garbage truck on the Krung Thep-Nonthaburi Road in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok, injuring two sanitation workers in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Officers from Mueang Nonthaburi Police Station received a report of the accident at 4am yesterday, November 7. Investigating officers arrived at the scene with the Ruam Katayu rescue team and rushed the two injured workers, a 34 year old man named Wirat Choeipim and a 57 year old Thai man named Choosak Fakkhiao, to hospital.

The garbage truck, a green Isuzu, was on the left side of the road and the back of the truck was damaged. In the middle of the road was a black Volvo S90 sedan with a damaged front end. The car’s owner, 38 year old Thai singer Thanakrit “Wan” Panichwid, had disappeared from the scene.

A 49 year old sanitation worker, Suthep Ratkui, who witnessed the incident, said he drove the garbage truck at a slow speed along the Krung Thep-Nonthaburi Road, stopping at every spot to collect rubbish.

When he reached Soi Krung Thep-Nonthaburi 13, he felt a smash into the back of the garbage truck and rushed to investigate. He found two injured colleagues and immediately called the police for help.

The condition of the two victims has not been revealed but ThaiRath reported that the two are still in hospital and cannot give details to the police.

The Thai singer, Wan, later surrendered to police at 4.45pm yesterday. Wan claimed he was not drunk but admitted to falling asleep while driving. He explained that he had been working hard since the morning, which left him exhausted. Wan added that he usually had a chauffeur and had only started driving alone this month.

Wan added that he did not flee from the police. The Thai singer waited at the garbage truck scene until the two injured victims were taken to hospital, and then went to the hospital for a medical check-up. Wan said he felt pain in his chest after being hit by the airbag.

According to Channel 3, officers ordered Wan to undergo alcohol and drug tests at Phra Nang Klao Hospital. Legal charges would be filed later after the tests.
