TORONTO, 8 Sept – “The Wild Robot,” an animated sci-fi tale by DreamWorks, delves into the dual nature of technology, according to Lupita Nyong’o at the film’s world premiere in Toronto. Based on Peter Brown’s book series, the story centres on a shipwrecked robot striving to survive on a deserted island.
Nyong’o, voicing the main character Roz, highlighted the film’s exploration of technology’s darker and beneficial aspects during the Toronto International Film Festival. Director Chris Sanders, who also penned the screenplay, pointed out the creative challenges of depicting technology, particularly since Brown’s books predate the current AI discourse.
Sanders, known for directing “Lilo & Stitch” and “How to Train Your Dragon,” expressed confidence in finding balance with new technologies. He noted that while initially exciting and slightly daunting, society will eventually navigate the complexities.

The film features voices from Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy, and Kit Connor, portraying the island’s animal inhabitants. Roz learns to communicate and employs kindness to survive. Nyong’o stressed the film’s core message that kindness is a superpower. She described Roz as a helpful robot who transcends her programming.
Sanders emphasized that while the theme of kindness wasn’t overt in the book, it became a vital element in the film adaptation. “The Wild Robot” hits cinemas on 27 September.
