Scott Moore prepares for Invictus Games with royal protocol tips

Moore shares advice on addressing Harry and Meghan for Invictus 2025

Scott Moore, now leading the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 as CEO, shared insights into the protocol guidance he received for addressing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Invictus Games, a project dear to Prince Harry, serves as a vital platform for wounded veterans. Moore, preparing for the royal couple’s visit, sought advice on the proper way to address them. He was informed to refer to Meghan with the phrase “Ma’am is fine” and to address Harry as “Sir,” marking a shift from the traditional “Your Royal Highness” titles.

Following their decision in 2020 to step back from royal duties, Harry and Meghan kept their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles but no longer use “Your Royal Highness.” Previously, protocol dictated the use of “Your Royal Highness” before “Sir” or “Ma’am” for royals. Their current titles reflect their altered status.

Recently, Harry and Meghan announced that their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, will use the surname “Sussex,” moving away from the conventional “Mountbatten-Windsor,” which defies the naming ruling set by Queen Elizabeth II in the 1960s. Harry’s current preference for “Sir” contrasts with his past casual approach. At a 2020 tourism conference in Edinburgh, he requested to be called simply “Harry,” as noted by the event’s host, Ayesha Hazarika.

Earlier in 2024, the Sussexes visited Whistler Blackcomb to meet Invictus athletes in preparation for the upcoming games. The Vancouver Whistler 2025 event will host over 500 athletes from around 25 countries. Competitions will include sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair basketball, and also winter sports disciplines, which are a new addition to the games, offering participants the opportunity to compete in winter conditions.
