Mike Amesbury suspended after street altercation caught on video
Footage shows Amesbury striking man, police investigation underway
Footage has surfaced showing Labour MP Mike Amesbury engaging in a confrontation before striking a man on the street. The video captures the two men standing a few feet apart, hands in pockets, for approximately 30 seconds before Amesbury unexpectedly punches the man. The conversation prior to the incident remains unclear, though Amesbury asserts he was “threatened on the street following an evening out with friends.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer labelled the footage as “shocking.” The Labour Party has suspended the MP while an investigation is underway. Cheshire Police confirmed a 55-year-old man was interviewed under caution and “released pending further enquiries.” The altercation took place in the early hours of Saturday in Main Street, Frodsham.
Additional footage from a different angle shows Amesbury continuing to punch the man after he falls, while bystanders step in. In another clip, Amesbury is heard shouting, “You won’t ever threaten me again,” and pointing at the man, stating, “Yes, I am [the MP], and you won’t threaten the MP ever again, will you?”
