A suspected drunk driver nearly collided with Vice President Kamala Harris’ motorcade in Wisconsin. Harris had just concluded a rally in Brookfield, a Milwaukee suburb, when her motorcade encountered a vehicle driving the wrong way on Interstate 94. Sheriff’s deputies, following the motorcade, stopped the car and arrested the driver, a 55-year-old Milwaukee man, after he failed field sobriety tests. Deputies also found an open alcohol container in the vehicle.
The driver claimed he was heading home after a night out and was unaware he was driving the wrong way. He told deputies he had no intentions of harming Harris or anyone associated with her campaign. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s office is awaiting the results of his blood alcohol test. Wisconsin’s legal driving limit is 0.08%. Authorities recommended charging the man with second-degree reckless endangerment and first-offense operating while intoxicated.
The man accessed the interstate via an off-ramp. It remains unclear which specific access points were blocked due to the motorcade and which law enforcement agency was tasked with closing them. Secret Service Special Agent Joseph Routh confirmed the interstate was closed, and the man entered from an off-ramp. No vehicles in the motorcade were hit, and it continued to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport without further issues.
