Brics declaration criticises unilateral sanctions, calls for peaceful conflict resolution

Brics urges end to unilateral sanctions and advocates for peaceful conflict resolutions

The Kazan Declaration, finalised at the Brics Summit, voiced concerns about the negative impact of unlawful unilateral coercive measures, including illegal sanctions, on the global economy, trade, and the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals. The declaration noted that such measures undermine the UN Charter, the multilateral trading system, sustainable development, and environmental agreements.

Although the declaration did not directly mention the Russia-Ukraine conflict, it highlighted concerns over the “rise of violence and continuing armed conflicts” and advocated for peaceful dispute resolutions through diplomacy, inclusive dialogue, and consultations. It emphasised the importance of engaging in conflict prevention by addressing their root causes.

On Wednesday, the Ukrainian foreign ministry commented that the Brics summit declaration showed the organisation lacked a unified stance on the Ukraine war. The ministry’s statement asserted that Moscow’s attempts to promote an alternative view of the Global South regarding Russian aggression against Ukraine had once again failed, revealing that Brics did not have a joint position on the matter.

The declaration also expressed deep concern over the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and southern Lebanon. It highlighted the “unprecedented escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip and West Bank due to the Israeli military offensive,” which resulted in mass civilian casualties, forced displacement, and extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. It called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of hostages and detainees from both sides, the unrestricted supply of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the cessation of all aggressive actions.

The Brics states condemned all forms of terrorism, labelling it a common threat requiring a comprehensive and balanced approach. They recognised that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, irrespective of their motivations, and stressed the need for a strong collective response to persistent and emerging terrorist threats. The declaration called for decisive measures to counter cross-border terrorist movement, terror financing, and other forms of support.
