Iron Maiden mourns former vocalist Paul Di’Anno

Paul Di'Anno's death: Iron Maiden pays tribute to former vocalist

Members of the renowned heavy metal band Iron Maiden have expressed their sorrow over the passing of their former vocalist, Paul Di’Anno. Di’Anno, who sang with the band from 1978 to 1981, contributed to their self-titled debut album and its follow-up, “Killers,” with tracks like “Running Free,” “Sanctuary,” and “Remember Tomorrow.”

Conquest Records, on behalf of Di’Anno’s family, announced his death on Monday. He passed away at his home in Salisbury at the age of 66. A message on Iron Maiden’s official X account stated, “We are all deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Paul Di’Anno earlier today. Paul’s contribution to Iron Maiden was immense and helped set us on the path we have been traveling as a band for almost five decades.

His pioneering presence as a frontman and vocalist, both on stage and on our first two albums, will be very fondly remembered not just by us, but by fans around the world. On behalf of the band, Rod and Andy, and the whole Iron Maiden team, we extend our deepest sympathies to Paul’s family and close friends. Rest in peace Paul.”

Steve Harris, the bass player and founder of Iron Maiden, reflected on Di’Anno’s passing, saying, “It’s just so sad he’s gone.” Harris mentioned speaking with Di’Anno recently and noted that performing kept him going. “At least he was still gigging until recently,” Harris added. “He will be missed by us all. Rest in peace mate.”

Di’Anno was recognised for his aggressive vocal style, which gave Iron Maiden a distinctive punk edge. He was arrested for carrying a knife, causing him to miss most of his debut performance with the band. In 1981, his erratic behaviour and drug use led to his dismissal. Bruce Dickinson replaced him as the lead singer, though Di’Anno continued to make guest appearances.

Post-Iron Maiden, Di’Anno recorded several solo albums and performed with other bands, including Battlezone and Killers. He married five times and had six children.
