A collision between two trains on a remote railway line in Wales has resulted in one fatality and 15 people being hospitalised. The incident occurred near Llanbrynmair, Powys, at 7.29pm when two passenger trains on the Cambrian line collided. Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that a man, whose age has not been disclosed, died in the crash. All other passengers have been evacuated from the trains and transported home via rail replacement buses. The police no longer maintain a presence at the site.
The crash has led to the closure of the railway line between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth. The main A470 trunk road in Talerddig has also been shut down, with motorists advised to seek alternative routes. This road is expected to remain closed until the early hours of Tuesday.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson confirmed the fatality and the multi-agency response that included several emergency services and rail industry agencies. The deceased’s family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers.
Superintendent Andrew Morgan expressed condolences to the affected families and indicated that British Transport Police and emergency services are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. An increased police presence will be noticeable in the area in the coming days.
Network Rail identified the trains involved as the 6.31pm Transport for Wales service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 7.09pm service from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury. A witness reported several injuries on board, claiming one person was airlifted to hospital.

Passengers were seen boarding replacement buses shortly after 11pm. Network Rail and Transport for Wales released a joint statement advising passengers to plan ahead and check travel updates via National Rail Enquiries.
