Zayn Malik has written a heartfelt tribute to his former bandmate Liam Payne, who passed away at 31. Payne was discovered dead in his Buenos Aires hotel room on 16 October, having reportedly fallen from the third-floor balcony.

As a homesick 17-year-old, you were always there with a positive outlook and a reassuring smile, making me feel loved and like a true friend. “You were younger but more sensible, headstrong, and unafraid to tell people when they were wrong. We clashed because of this sometimes, but I always respected you for it.
“In music, you were the most knowledgeable. I was inexperienced, but you were already a professional. It was comforting to know that, no matter what, we could rely on you to guide us. “Your departure feels like losing a brother. I can’t express how much I wish I could hug you one last time, say goodbye properly, and tell you how much I loved and respected you.
“I will hold onto our memories forever. Words can’t describe how devastated I am. “Wherever you are now, I hope you’re at peace and know how much you are loved.” Malik ended his tribute with, “Love you, bro.”
