Baby Reindeer triumphs at Emmys alongside Shogun, The Bear, and Hacks

Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning win major awards for Baby Reindeer

The hit British series Baby Reindeer emerged as one of the major winners at this year’s Emmy Awards, alongside Shogun, The Bear, and Hacks. Richard Gadd, who both created and starred in Baby Reindeer, won awards for writing and acting in the limited series category. Co-star Jessica Gunning received the best supporting actress award.

The Bear secured four comedy awards, with accolades for Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colon-Zayas. Hacks was named best comedy series. Elizabeth Debicki won her first Emmy for her portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales, in The Crown. Jodie Foster, already an Oscar winner, earned her first Emmy as best lead actress in a limited series for True Detective: Night Country.

During his acceptance speech, Gadd, 35, described winning as a “stuff of dreams.” He accepted awards for outstanding limited series, best writing, and lead actor. Baby Reindeer, inspired by Gadd’s real-life experiences, tells the story of Donny Dunn, stalked by a woman named Martha. Earlier this year, the show went viral and faced legal challenges from a woman claiming to be the real Martha.

Gadd encouraged those struggling to persevere, saying, “Ten years ago, I was down and out. I never thought I’d get my life together… now here I am, picking up one of the biggest writing awards in television.” Gunning, accepting her award, expressed pride in her role, saying, “Thank you for trusting me to be your Martha.”

The ceremony, held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, also celebrated Shogun’s success. The show, based on James Clavell’s novel and set in the 1600s, launched in February. Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai made history as the first Japanese actors to win Emmys in dramatic acting categories. Sanada, receiving a standing ovation, stated, “Shogun taught me that when people work together, we can make miracles.” Sawai, visibly emotional, dedicated her win to women who set an example for everyone.

The Bear also enjoyed significant success. Eugene and Dan Levy, hosting, joked that the series, which portrays the pressures of working in a professional kitchen, might be better classified as a drama. Jeremy Allen White, awarded lead actor in a comedy series, expressed gratitude, saying, “This show has changed my life.” His co-stars Moss-Bachrach and Colon-Zayas also won supporting actor and actress awards in comedy.

Despite The Bear’s achievements, Hacks surprised everyone by winning best comedy series. This was the second Emmys ceremony this year, as the event scheduled for September 2023 was postponed to January 2024 due to strikes by US writers and actors. The Bear had also been a significant winner then, along with Succession and Beef.
