Creator of Danger Mouse, Brian Trueman, dies aged 92

British writer and cartoon creator Brian Trueman passes away at 92

Brian Trueman, the British writer known for creating popular cartoons such as Danger Mouse and Count Duckula, has passed away at the age of 92, according to his son. Ben Trueman announced the news on the social media platform X, stating, “Some sad news. My father, Brian Trueman, has died. 92 years of happy life. A career in television and radio that included Children’s Hour, Clitheroe Kid, Scene at 6.30, Granada Reports, Brass Tacks, Screen Test.”

Ben described his father as “clever, funny, resilient, and an absolute gentleman,” noting his significant contributions to shows like Danger Mouse, Count Duckula, Jamie and the Magic Torch, Cockleshell Bay, and Chorlton and the Wheelies. Among these, Danger Mouse stood out, featuring voices from Only Fools and Horses actor David Jason and Carry On star Terry Scott. Jason voiced the brave protagonist, self-proclaimed as the “world’s greatest secret agent,” with Scott as his bumbling sidekick, Penfold.

Trueman wrote 79 episodes of the original Danger Mouse series, which aired from 1981 to 1992, and was revived by the BBC from 2015 to 2019. His work also included 11 episodes of Count Duckula, a cartoon about a fame-obsessed vegetarian vampire.

In addition to writing, Trueman lent his voice to 47 characters in Count Duckula over its 65 episodes, including the role of Nanny and various background characters.

Born in Manchester, Trueman was closely associated with the British animation studio Cosgrove Hall. Founded in 1976 by Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, the studio produced some of the most beloved children’s shows of the 1980s before ceasing operations in 2009.
