Small plane crash in Fairview kills three, ignites fires

Twin-engine plane crashes into townhouses, three dead, fires ignite

A small twin-engine aircraft crashed into a residential area in a Portland, Oregon suburb on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of two people aboard and one person on the ground, authorities reported Sunday.

The Cessna 421C encountered mechanical problems before crashing into a row of townhouses near Heartwood Circle in Fairview, as stated by the Gresham Fire Department. Gresham Fire Chief Scott Lewis confirmed the deaths of the pilot, one passenger, and a resident of the impacted townhouses. The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed.

The incident occurred near Troutdale Airport at around 10:20 a.m. local time, striking a power pole or tower, which sparked a brush fire. The aircraft then collided with a townhouse complex, igniting fires in two buildings and spreading to a fourth, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office during a Saturday news conference.

At least five families have been displaced, and a sixth condo is under evaluation, Lewis added. Two transmission lines from Portland General Electric were down on Saturday afternoon. Fairview is approximately 15 miles northeast of Portland.

Debris from the crash is spread over several areas, with the sheriff’s office securing the scene to support the FAA investigation. Photos show thick smoke and a burning home post-crash.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation. The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide updates.
