UK faces North-South weather divide this weekend

Split weather forecast with warm south and cooler north in the UK

New weather forecasts illustrate a distinct North-South divide across the UK this weekend, with contrasting conditions on each side. As summer draws to a close, maps indicate that the south of England will enjoy sunny weather with temperatures rising to a warm 26C. A weather expert has advised residents to “savour it while you can,” predicting two weeks of pleasant weather before autumn brings cooler temperatures.

On Sunday, September 1, London is expected to see the highest temperatures, reaching up to 26C. Similar highs of around 25C will extend throughout the south, including Birmingham and Cardiff, where temperatures will hit 24C.

In contrast, northern regions will experience significantly cooler weather, with temperatures dropping to 12C in the Scottish Highlands and 17C in Newcastle. Jim Dale, senior meteorologist and founder of British Weather Services, suggested summer might last into September, mentioning a possible 27C in southeast England. He said, “It’s correct, a new month and autumn dawns with a predicted 27C in southeast England. Savour it if you can. Though it may not be the end of summer-like weather just yet, September can deliver in spades!”

The Met Office, however, remains cautious about predicting a warm weekend. Their outlook suggests “mostly fine and dry on Saturday across the UK” but warns of “cloudier conditions on Sunday with a risk of some rain in the far northwest and potential thunderstorms in the south.”

A longer-range forecast covering Tuesday, September 3 to Thursday, September 12, states: “High pressure is most likely to be situated over or near the UK during much of this period, leading to generally settled weather for most, with some cool nights but near or slightly above average daytime temperatures.

“Early in the period, a weak showery regime may still be clearing eastwards. Later, weak frontal systems could bring some cloud and patchy rain in north-western areas at times. There is a chance of heavy thundery showers and more humid conditions in the south, especially later when the high pressure may drift slowly westward. However, many areas are more likely to experience drier than normal conditions with predominantly settled weather and light winds.”

The weather agency also highlighted the possibility of heavy thundery showers and increased humidity in the south, particularly later in the period when high pressure might begin to move westward. Many regions are expected to be drier than usual with mostly settled weather and light winds.
