Kansas City chef Shaun Brady fatally shot in restaurant car park

Kansas City mourns chef Shaun Brady's tragic car park shooting

The Kansas City community is grieving the loss of local chef Shaun Brady, who was fatally shot while taking out the rubbish in the parking lot of his restaurant. Brady, owner of Brady & Fox, was celebrated for his contributions to the local Irish community and the Kansas City Irish Festival, scheduled for this weekend.

Following the incident on Wednesday night, Mayor Quinton Lucas expressed his condolences to Brady’s family and called for changes in the city, which has seen a rise in violent crime recently. Lucas stated on Thursday that he was heartbroken by the news and inspired by Brady’s efforts to build a community in Kansas City. He expressed further distress over the violent nature of Brady’s death.

The Kansas City Police Department confirmed that the shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. at Brady & Fox, also known as Brady’s KC, in Brookside. The preliminary investigation indicated that Brady encountered multiple individuals near a vehicle while taking out the rubbish. An interaction ensued, leading to Brady being shot.

Police apprehended two teenage male suspects within an hour of the incident and recovered a vehicle in Midtown. The case is being investigated as a homicide, and the suspects are being held for further investigation.

Mayor Lucas referenced ongoing concerns from local business owners about rising crime in Brookside, Waldo, Prospect, Crossroads, and other areas. He noted that property and nuisance crimes have increased, affecting stores, parking lots, and customers.

Gun violence in Kansas City gained national attention in February when shots were fired during the city’s Super Bowl parade, resulting in one death and 20 injuries. Lucas, present at the parade, termed the incident “an incredible disappointment.”

Kansas City experienced its deadliest year on record in 2023, with 182 homicides, according to the Kansas City Police Department’s daily homicide analysis. This number surpasses the 2022 total by 12 and exceeds the previous record of 179 homicides in 2020.
