German police fatally shoot knife attacker in Moers

Suspect killed after attacking pedestrians with knives in Moers

German authorities reported on Tuesday they had fatally shot a man accused of attacking pedestrians with knives in Moers, a town in the west of the country. This incident occurred just days after a deadly knife assault in nearby Solingen.

Emergency responders received a call at approximately 2:45 pm (1245 GMT) on Tuesday, alerting them to a man who had “assaulted and threatened several passers-by” in Moers, according to a statement from Duisburg police. Officers tracked down the 26-year-old German suspect, who then “attacked (them) with two knives in his hands,” the police revealed.

The police responded by shooting the suspect, resulting in his fatal injury. No other individuals were harmed in the encounter.

Germany remains on high alert following a knife attack on Friday in Solingen, roughly 45 kilometres (28 miles) from Moers, which left three people dead and eight injured. Authorities suspect a 26-year-old Syrian with alleged ties to the Islamic State group carried out the attack.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, honouring the victims on Monday, vowed to tighten Germany’s weapons laws, particularly concerning knives. He promised that stronger weapons controls would be implemented “very quickly.”

The Solingen attack has sparked renewed debate over immigration in Germany and has increased pressure on Scholz ahead of important regional elections scheduled for Sunday. The suspected attacker was supposed to have been deported to Bulgaria, his initial point of entry into the European Union, but appears to have evaded deportation efforts.

Scholz stated on Monday that Germany would “do everything we can to ensure that those who cannot and must not stay here in Germany are repatriated and deported.”
