Arizona man arrested for threats against Donald Trump

Ronald Syvrud arrested in Arizona for threatening to kill Trump

Authorities have detained an Arizona man accused of making threats against former President Donald Trump. Ronald Syvrud, who allegedly posted multiple threats to kill Trump on social media in recent weeks, was apprehended in Cochise County on Thursday afternoon. Further details were not disclosed, said county public information officer Carol Capas.

Capas did not specify which social media platform was used for the threats. The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office announced on Facebook that Syvrud was “taken into custody without incident.” Trump was in Cochise County on Thursday, speaking at the United States-Mexico border. Law enforcement had briefed Trump’s team about the search for Syvrud before his arrival, a source confirmed.

US Secret Service spokesperson Alexandria Worley stated that the agency is investigating Syvrud. “The U.S. Secret Service investigates all threats against our protectees. As this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further at this time,” Worley said.

According to the sheriff’s office, the 66-year-old Syvrud was also wanted for several outstanding warrants, including DUI charges, felony hit and run, and failing to register as a sex offender. Syvrud resides in Benson, Arizona, approximately 50 miles southeast of Tucson.

The sheriff’s office had deployed additional investigative resources to locate Syvrud while also supporting state and federal law enforcement for Trump’s visit. When questioned about Syvrud during his border speech, Trump said he was unaware of the investigation but was “not that surprised.”

“I’ve heard it’s dangerous, but I also have a job to do… I haven’t heard about that. They probably want to keep it from me,” Trump remarked. “I have heard it was very unsafe to make this trip; there were some people that really didn’t want me to make it.”

Following an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last month, the Secret Service heightened Trump’s security detail and planned to use bulletproof glass at future campaign events, a senior official revealed.

Updates will follow as this story develops.
