Former actor sentenced to 18 months for assaulting ex-girlfriend
Former Hollywood actor Jason Hoganson has been imprisoned following a disturbing attack on his ex-girlfriend in a public street.
Jason Hoganson, who starred in the 1988 film Empire State with Ray McAnally, Jamie Foreman, and Martin Landau, saw his promising career derailed by alcohol, drugs, and criminal activity. His once-recognisable face now bears numerous scars, and his head is adorned with prominent tattoos.
Newcastle Crown Court revealed that Hoganson, now with 109 convictions, was captured on a doorbell camera assaulting his former partner in Newcastle on 11 December last year. Prosecutor Amy Levitt stated a restraining order was in place to prevent him from contacting the woman when the assault occurred.
Levitt described the footage showing Hoganson slapping the woman, who then walked away, only for him to pursue and continue the assault. The attack included further hits, a push that caused her to fall, and continued violence while she was on the ground. The victim reported being pushed, hit, kicked, and having Hoganson’s body weight pressed on her during the three-minute ordeal.
Jason Hoganson had received the restraining order after being convicted of battery and criminal damage in May of the previous year. Hoganson, aged 53 and of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and breaching the restraining order.
Defence lawyer Ian Crook highlighted Hoganson’s past as a talented actor who secured a significant role in a crime thriller. Crook explained that the pressures of fame led Hoganson to substance abuse, resulting in his downward spiral. Having a complex mental health history, he has also served as a mentor to others while in prison on remand.
Judge Tim Gittins sentenced Hoganson to 18 months in prison, much of which he has already spent on remand.
