Gaza journalist killed in Israeli fire, health ministry confirms

Ibrahim Muharab's death follows Israeli shelling, Palestinian news site reports

A journalist in Gaza, under Hamas administration, was killed by Israeli fire on Sunday, the health ministry and a Palestinian news site reported on Monday. Ibrahim Muharab’s body arrived at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, the ministry confirmed. Palestinian Daily News, Muharab’s employer, stated he died “following shelling from the Israeli occupation on him and a group of journalists.” Muharab’s body was discovered on Monday morning in Hamad City, a devastated apartment complex built by Qatar.

Two other journalists with Muharab were injured and also taken to Nasser Hospital, according to an on-site journalist. Videos circulating online, though unverified by AFP, depict an Israeli armoured vehicle approaching a Hamas area amidst gunfire. One individual wearing a “Press” jacket is seen fleeing before a voice mentions, “Ibrahim is wounded, where is he?”

Approximately 30 people gathered at the hospital on Monday around Muharab’s body, which was placed under a white plastic sheet with a “Press” bulletproof jacket on top, AFPTV footage showed. The Israeli army, contacted by AFP, declined to comment without the geographic coordinates of Muharab’s death and his identification. An army spokesperson stated, “The army has never, and will never, deliberately target journalists.”

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned Muharab’s killing, describing it as an “assassination” and alleging an “organised campaign” by the Israeli army to kill journalists in Gaza. Gaza journalist Ibrahim Qanan, present at the hospital, accused Israel of trying to “kill the truth” by eliminating witnesses to events in Gaza.

The Israeli army has previously killed several journalists in Gaza, accusing them of ties to Hamas or Islamic Jihad. The Committee to Protect Journalists reported on Monday that “at least 113 journalists and media workers” have died since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began on October 7. This is the “deadliest period for journalists since the CPJ began gathering data in 1992.”
