Noman Ahmed jailed for 14 months after Middlesbrough riot

A 24-year-old engineering graduate, Noman Ahmed, faced a significant upheaval in his life after being sentenced to 14 months in jail for punching a man during anti-immigration riots. Ahmed was part of a group of Muslims who went to protect a mosque in Middlesbrough amidst the nationwide unrest. When confronted by two white men making racist threats, the situation escalated, leading to a chase and subsequent attack on the men.

Prosecutor Rachel Masters presented evidence showing Ahmed on camera punching or attempting to punch one of the individuals. This incident had severe repercussions for Ahmed. Defence lawyer Gary Wood revealed that Ahmed lost his job as a salesperson with EE due to the incident. Additionally, Ahmed’s upcoming wedding, scheduled for eight days later, was called off as he would be incarcerated.

Wood highlighted the emotional toll on Ahmed’s family, stating it was the first time Ahmed had appeared in court, leaving his loved ones devastated. The well-planned wedding, set for August 24, had incurred significant financial costs for both Ahmed’s and his fiancée’s families.

The defence also noted the deep disappointment felt by Ahmed’s future wife and her family due to his actions. Despite Ahmed’s clean record and positive character references describing him as polite and intelligent, Judge Francis Laird, KC, decided on a custodial sentence.
