Minors face court for riot offences amid widespread arrests

Hundreds charged, including minors, for rioting after Southport stabbings

Two boys, aged 12, and a 13-year-old girl are among several minors facing court for riot-related offences. Most of those charged are expected to receive prison sentences. By Monday, nearly 1,000 individuals had been arrested, with nearly 400 charged following the disturbances sparked by the Southport stabbings. Around 50 of the accused are believed to be under 18.

The youngest defendants so far are two 12-year-old boys, one of whom was involved in two separate riots. A judge noted that this boy was highly active in the violence. Several individuals have already been sentenced:

Joshua Simpson, 25, a self-employed builder, was the first to be convicted for rioting outside a hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham. He assaulted an emergency worker by kicking a riot shield into an officer’s leg. Simpson admitted to the crime and awaits sentencing.

Derek Drummond, 58, received a three-year sentence for his role in the violence in Southport on June 30. He assaulted a police officer during the riots. Drummond handed himself in to the police after a public appeal.

Steven Mailen, 54, and Ryan Sheers, 29, were jailed for two years and two months each after taking part in unrest in Hartlepool. They were identified as leading figures in the disturbance, with Sheers bitten by a police dog.

William Morgan, 69, was sentenced to two years and eight months for his involvement in a riot where police were attacked, and a library was set on fire. He admitted to violent disorder and carrying a cosh.

Brothers Adam Wharton, 28, and Ellis Wharton, 22, looted their local library in Liverpool. Adam received a 20-month sentence, and Ellis was jailed for 11 months. They targeted the library after it was damaged during the riots.

Leanne Hodgson, 43, was sentenced to two and a half years for pushing industrial bins at officers and using racist language during a riot in Sunderland.

Josh Kellett, 29, threw stones at officers during disturbances in Sunderland. He wore a balaclava but was identified by his tattoos. He was sentenced to two and a half years.

Cole Stewart, 18, was detained for 18 months after throwing a rock that hit a police officer during riots in Darlington. He celebrated his act before being arrested.

John Honey, 25, participated in a violent 12-hour disorder in Hull. He pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including violent disorder and burglary. Honey was noted for his lack of remorse and over-confident behaviour.
