Banned driver jailed for causing girlfriend’s death in crash

Driver sentenced after causing fatal crash by falling asleep at the wheel

A banned driver who caused the death of his girlfriend in a crash after falling asleep at the wheel has been sentenced to prison.

Edward Carty, 31, allowed the vehicle he was operating to drift off the A90 road near Errol, Perthshire. The car went down an embankment and collided with trees, resulting in the death of Rebecca Tasker, 32.

Carty had been driving for approximately 14 hours on a cross-country trip from Arbroath, Angus, to Lochinver, Sutherland, and back before the incident occurred.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, Judge Lord Young sentenced Carty to five years and three months in jail, describing the crash’s consequences as ‘devastating’. He noted that Rebecca Tasker was a young woman from a close and loving family.

Although her two young children, aged seven and ten, were not physically injured in the crash, they now face growing up without their mother. Another passenger, a teenage friend of Carty, also escaped unharmed. Ms Tasker was declared dead at the scene due to spinal and neck injuries.

Carty, from Blackburn, Lancashire, had previously admitted to causing Ms Tasker’s death on August 12, 2022, by driving dangerously. He sustained injuries and suffered a stroke, later admitting on TikTok that he had fallen asleep.

Defence solicitor advocate Brian Bell conveyed Carty’s genuine remorse for his actions that day. The court learned that Carty and Ms Tasker had been in a relationship for about six weeks when the crash happened.

Carty has prior convictions for driving without a licence, without insurance, and while disqualified, as well as for offences involving violence and dishonesty. He is banned from driving for nine years and four months.
