Thug hurled missile after vigil for murdered Southport children

Carey threw a missile after vigil for murdered Southport children

A thug hurled a missile minutes after allegedly attending a vigil for three children tragically killed in Southport last week.

Dylan Carey had earlier paid his respects to Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar. He claimed he travelled from Greater Manchester to Southport because his girlfriend wanted to “lay flowers and light a candle” for the girls, who were stabbed to death the previous day at ages six, seven, and nine.

Carey then became involved in disorder near a mosque on St Luke’s Road. The 26-year-old kicked police vans as trouble flared after false information about the killer’s connection to Islam spread online.

Liverpool Magistrates’ Court heard today that a hostile crowd of around 200 people gathered in the area, throwing items towards the mosque. Participants chanted offensive phrases towards police officers.

Carey, from Castle Hill Road in Hindley, Wigan, was later identified at Southport Station. A PC recognised him from body-worn camera footage and videos shared publicly. A mobile phone clip, shown in court, depicted him in a grey t-shirt and cap picking up and throwing an object before kicking a police van as it drove away.

Body-worn footage also showed him kicking a stationary police vehicle. During his interview following arrest, Carey, with no prior convictions, said he was present as “his girlfriend attended the vigil to lay flowers and light a candle.”

He mentioned seeing a Facebook post from a councillor about a “peaceful protest” and attended in solidarity. Prosecutor Joshua Sanderson-Kirk stated, “He said he got more angry about the three girls’ murders and became involved in the disorder. He admitted to kicking the vehicle and throwing a water bottle.”

Carey, wearing a black shirt with mousey hair and a beard in the dock, pleaded guilty to one charge of violent disorder. He was remanded into custody ahead of his sentencing before Liverpool Crown Court on August 12. District Judge Timothy Boswell warned, “There is a real prospect of an immediate custodial sentence.”

During the hearing, one man in the public gallery clutched his chest as the case details were read. Carey, represented by solicitor Bill Pearson, nodded and said “ok” as the hearing was adjourned. He blew a kiss to his supporters, with one woman seen in tears, as he was led to the cells.
