Bebe Rexha alleges hate crime by airport security

Singer claims discrimination at Munich Airport over speaking Albanian

Bebe Rexha emotionally shared with her followers that a flight security guard committed a hate crime against her, preventing her from boarding her plane.

The singer, whose real name is Bleta Rexha, stated the incident began when she spoke Albanian to the security guard. On 17 August, the 34-year-old was at Munich International Airport in Germany and claims she was barred from her flight after an altercation with the male guard.

Rexha posted a tearful video on social media explaining the situation. On her Instagram Story, she said, “The supervisor for this flight on Lufthansa is threatening me.” She captioned the video, “Lufthansa, I’ve been threatened because I thought the security agent was Albanian. I spoke to him in Albanian asking where to get my ticket and now he’s banning me from the flight.”

She added that the man tried to abuse his power and refused to cooperate as she attempted to resolve the situation. In a follow-up post, she said, “I believe this to be a hate crime because I am Albanian. He would not let me take his name. He continued to mentally abuse me to make me feel like he was more powerful than he was.”

Rexha also noted that none of the female Lufthansa staff intervened to assist. She continued, “He would not give me his name. But I just found out he works for ATSG, a service company document control hired by Lufthansa.”

After being contacted by Lufthansa, Rexha provided another update. She said, “I have never been so emotionally drained. Lufthansa has direct messaged me, but I urge them to conduct a full investigation to find out who this man abusing his power is. An ‘I’m sorry’ is not going to cut it this time.”

Rexha’s mother also posted on her account, threatening legal action against the airline over the altercation.

A Lufthansa representative addressed the situation, stating, “We reached out to Bebe Rexha and are in direct contact with her to understand the situation. As an international airline, we connect people and countries around the globe. Our guests and employees come from all over the world. Diversity and equal opportunity are core values for our company and our corporate culture. We do not tolerate any discriminatory behaviour of any kind.”

The representative also confirmed the singer was ultimately able to board the flight normally.
