$3m worth of meth found hidden in celery at Atlanta market

Largest methamphetamine seizure in Atlanta, worth $3m, hidden in celery.

A ton of methamphetamine was discovered smuggled in celery before reaching an Atlanta farmers’ market, as reported by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The DEA in Atlanta intercepted a Mexican cartel’s methamphetamine drop-off planned for a Georgia market. During a Monday press conference, officials revealed this was the largest seizure in the Atlanta division’s history, with 2,380 pounds of meth found.

The operation, involving multiple agencies, prevented millions of dollars worth of methamphetamine from entering the US underground economy. DEA Special Agent in Charge Robert Murphy stated this was Atlanta’s largest meth seizure and the DEA’s third-largest nationwide.

DEA officials confirmed that the meth, meant for distribution in the Southeast, no longer poses a threat. Murphy detailed they received a tip about a tractor trailer coming from Mexico. The meth was found inside the trailer, hidden in celery, destined for the Atlanta State Farmers’ Market in Forest Park. The celery was disposed of and did not reach stores.

A 40-year-old Mexican national, Jesus Martinez Martinez, was arrested in connection with the meth, valued at $3 million wholesale. Murphy noted the confidence of the cartel in sending such a large shipment.

Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper highlighted the importance of keeping consumers safe, noting the potential for contamination if drugs move through the produce terminal. Harper stressed that using agriculture as a cover for criminal activities would lead to prosecution and imprisonment.

The seized drugs will be tested, but the DEA believes the shipment contained only methamphetamine.
