On Tuesday, Russia attacked a high-rise apartment building and a bakery in Kharkiv, located in northeastern Ukraine, using guided bombs. This assault resulted in at least three fatalities and 34 injuries, with some individuals possibly still trapped under the debris. Authorities reported a separate attack further south in Zaporizhzhia, where seven people sustained injuries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy commented on the Kharkiv strikes on X, noting that the bombs targeted an apartment building, a bakery, and a stadium, affecting the daily life of ordinary citizens. The attack coincided with world leaders, including Zelenskiy, convening in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Zelenskiy emphasised the need to halt the terror to ensure security and a future, amidst global discussions on collective security efforts.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov stated on Telegram that Russian forces had struck four city districts with guided bombs. Some bombs landed in open areas, causing minimal damage. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov mentioned that a 17-year-old was among the injured, with four individuals in serious condition. Images from the site depicted a gaping hole in the nine-storey apartment building, with several floors obliterated by a direct hit. Terekhov noted that this building had previously been attacked at the start of Russia’s 2022 invasion and had almost been repaired before being targeted again. The most damaged section housed 82 residents.

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, frequently faces Russian attacks. Moscow’s forces often deploy guided bombs that are difficult for Ukrainian air defences to intercept. Regional governor Ivan Fedorov confirmed the use of guided bombs in the latest strike on Zaporizhzhia, destroying several private homes. Four of the seven injured were hospitalised, and one person was killed in an overnight strike on the city.
Kyiv argues that the most effective way to reduce these attacks is to target the planes and airfields launching the bombs, rather than the bombs themselves. Despite Russia’s denial of targeting civilians, thousands have been killed in over two and a half years of conflict.
