Fayed’s legacy in jeopardy amid multiple rape allegations
Harrods launches probe after rape claims against Mohamed al Fayed emerge
An alleged victim of Mohamed al Fayed is saying his legacy will be “smashed” as more women come forward with accusations.
Five women have claimed Fayed raped them, with several others alleging of sexual misconduct. Harrods expressed shock at the allegations, emphasising it operates differently now compared to when Fayed owned it from 1985 to 2010.
Maria Mulla, a lawyer for the Justice for Harrods Survivors group, revealed last Thursday they represent 37 women, with an additional 100 enquiries over the weekend.
Cheska, one of the alleged victims, recounted Fayed grabbed her and kissed her when she was 19. Fayed then allegedly offered her help with her acting career in exchange for sleeping with him.
Initially, she didn’t think she could challenge Fayed when she went public in 2018 but feels differently now, despite his death.
Cheska believes exposing these allegations brings a sense of closure and impacts Fayed’s legacy. She expressed relief that more victims are coming forward and hopes for peace for everyone involved.
A new investigation
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reviewed evidence against Fayed in 2009 and 2015 but chose not to prosecute due to insufficient prospects of conviction.
Cheska, who briefly worked at Harrods, said she never returned after the incident and was never contacted by the store regarding her absence. She commended the bravery of other women sharing their stories but lamented Fayed is not alive to face the accusations.
Harrods began an investigation on Monday into whether current staff are involved in these allegations. The store assured that its settlement process, designed with input from independent legal experts, aims for swift and impartial resolutions for victims.
An internal review, supported by external counsel, is also underway. Additionally, Harrods’ Board has formed a non-executive committee to address issues arising from these allegations. The store is cooperating with the Metropolitan Police.
Harrods has created a webpage for former employees to submit allegations. Ms Mulla criticised Harrods’ response as inadequate given the gravity of the allegations, asserting that those involved should be concerned.
