Top 10 Roast Dinners in Phuket

Many of us are away from home living as ‘expats’ on this tropical island and while we all love Thai food, especially street local food, sometimes we miss the comforts of home. And what’s more homely than our extensively researched (we all love a good roast) Top Ten Sunday Roasts, in no particular order.

1. Les Diables, Boat Lagoon

The Sunday Roast at Les Diables has been an institution in this town for many years, and populated by locals and tourists alike. The ever-changing Sunday Roast at just 500 Baht offers an appetizer, soup, main course and a choice from the word famous cake cabinet. The owner Peter Webber was Head Pastry Chef at the Mandarin Oriental, and believe me it is hard to choose just one cake. The roast options are often beef wellington, pork shoulder, lamb, duck and chicken, fish and vegetarian options are available also. With a limited seating capacity we highly recommend you book. Available Midday – 5pm.

2. Thong Dee, the Kathu Brasserie

Popular with the University crowd and especially locals in Kathu, this for me is the best of the best Sunday Roasts on the island. With options of just choosing one meat, (chicken for example 290 Baht) or a combination, you don’t need to worry about food envy from your friends, you can have the beef, lamb and chicken. Served with twice-cooked crispy roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and Yorkshire puddings. Open from 2.30pm on Sundays.

3. The Irish Times, Junceylon Patong

These boys do a roast right! Many punters are seeking shelter at The Irish Times from the shopping in Junceylon and around the streets of Patong. At just 399 Baht you can choose from lamb, pork, beef, ham and chicken, all served with the traditional trimmings including fabulous Yorkshire puddings. Also included in the price is a selected beverage. Incredibly busy on a Sunday for the roast, it is essential that you book. Roast available from 12.30pm – 8.30pm.

4. The Surin Bay Inn, Surin

Off the beaten track, this little gem serves consistently good Sunday Roasts, that we have enjoyed for many years. The roast menu changes weekly, so the special roast menu is presented each week at the table, options included pork, lamb, beef, and chicken all served with seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes and trimmings. Especially good if you want to catch the game on the big screen TV’s dotted around the place. Roasts available from Midday.

5. Hole in One, Kathu

It may not be fancy and you need to get in early for fear that they might run out. But it’s a great roast and there’s plenty of it. Serving starts at 4pm on Sundays. Hole In One is your typical ‘farang’ eat bar with the attentive bar girls, pool table and great value food all week. You’d drive past it without really thinking much of it except that their roast really deserves a go. We’d give you a link to their Facebook page or website but they don’t have one. So drop in one Sunday and try it out. Chicken roast starts at 260 baht.

6. The Islander, Rawai

Located in a quiet area down the very South of the Island, this place is well supported by locals and tourists alike. Popular throughout the week for their various blackboard food specials, the Sunday Roast is once again an institution among locals. Starting at just 290 Baht for lamb, chicken, pork or beef all served with seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings and a few surprises, it’s well worth the trip down South. If the sun is shining a touch of lawn bowls might be on the cards too, or watch live sporting action throughout the day. Roast available from Midday.

7. Peppers Sports Bar, Laguna

Located in the very lively entrance to Laguna and Boat Avenue district, where there are a number of great eateries and local hangouts, Pepper’s Sports Bar is exactly what you’d expect from its name, a traditional English Pub with good pub ‘grub’. Live sports action throughout the weekdays and bustling on the weekends, the Sunday Roasts is consistently good with their lamb, pork and chicken options, served with green peas, roast potatoes and a sumptuous gravy. 8. Shakers Restaurant and Pub, Nai Harn

Most famous on the island of Phuket for its “all you can eat bbq ribs“ which are just delicious, there is no other way to describe them, moist and sweet they fall from the bone! But stamping their mark on the very competitive Sunday Roast market, the spit roast served with all the trimmings are excellent, the menu changes often including pork, chicken, lamb and beef. Open from Midday.

9. La Gritta, Patong

This is by no means your traditional Sunday Roast, however any list that does not include La Gritta at The Amari in Patong would not be complete. I can hear you say an Italian restaurant is no place for a Sunday Roast, and ordinarily I would agree with you, but the pork, tenderloin, lamb and tomahawk, all from the grill served with seasonal vegetables and sides, is amazing. The Chef de Cuisine Patrizia knows her way around a grill, more expensive than others on the list however worth a try for a special occasion and wonderful experience. Open from 10am – Midnight.
