Someone who was a ousted  ruler from Iran once said back in the 70’s ,that the media would cause the downfall of the western culture !

At the time it didn’t sink in (being that he was from that Country) but it( media stigma) stayed with me for all these years?

Your views are not shared by Hong Kongers and I mean real Hong Kongers not from Mainland China because they see them as invaders and foreigners not as Hong Kongers and they not speak the same language!

Yes they do. A large swath of southern China uses Cantonese as their main dialect.

This has nothing to do with western countries as some have said Hong Kong people have their own identities apart from the mainland Chinese. They are proud of that. The younger generation certainly believe in holding onto their culture and language and hate Beijing for trying to take that away from them. With the newest law, literally anything can make one a seditionist there. People like Carry Lam and her cronies are moving Beijing’s agenda to basically crush any dissent and gradually turn Hong Kong into a by the step Chinese province. Unfortunately many of my friends there have had to leave the country because they see what’s happening and want something better for their families.
No western country is responsible for China not adhering to the 50 year agreement set in 1997 when the Brits pulled out. China just smiled when they left and thought, “Wait and see…”

Seems the Chinese have 10 main languages and hundreds of minor dialects. (Wikipedia)

Would have thought after some 80 plus years of their Communist Utopia they would have sorted out a common language instead of worrying about what religion people believe in.  Language differences divide a populace, so think China cannot ever be a truly united country.

But not all speak it.

Do All Chinese Speak Mandarin? (How Many Of Them Do?) – AutoLingual

In China, around 70% of the population speaks some form of Mandarin, but the different dialects of Mandarin aren’t always mutually intelligible. Among the older demographic, minorities, and in rural areas, Mandarin isn’t as common and other languages are spoken, but within the next few decades, the proportion of Mandarin speakers might grow.

The fact of the matter is, though, that different Chinese languages are (mostly) unintelligible between each other. Someone who speaks Mandarin won’t necessarily understand a Cantonese speaker, for example.

As said upstairs, about six posts ago, most people in these regions speak both Cantonese and Mandarin anyway from very young or a blend of the two, called 'bai hua'. In a country this size there will always be accent/dialect problems but they're not insurmountable. After all,if they phase some dialects out, the Americans will scream 'genocide!'

There are places on the planet where there's only one language and they still make a mess of that.

It's obvious you aren't familiar with anything going on in the country by your posts, so why are you even commenting on it?
