I remember that after the tsunami there were some devices installed to provide an early warning of another tsunami.
Within a few months of some of these early warning devices being installed I seem to remember someone external from the monitoring group made public the fact that one unit in the sea had stopped functioning because the batteries had failed, but no one had bothered to replace them.

The only reason I remember was because at the time I made a quip about one of the staff being sent to a 7-Eleven to buy some more AA batteries.
