Not quite as pride-inducing as being ranked the number 1 city for a workation in the world or the 4th best place to live in Southeast Asia, but Bangkok has recently been listed as having the 14th worst air pollution globally on the World Air Quality Index. The dubious honour was awarded on Wednesday as Bangkok faces more days where particle matter in the air reaches the dangerous PM2.5 level next week. The Pollution Control Department warns that air quality in Bangkok and around the country will worsen over the next 7 days with air quality readings yesterday by the […]

For once I'd say Neill Fronde is absolutely spot on - if things are that bad, and the last time I was there they were, why would many people want to live or take a workation there?

Sure, a lot comes in from the surrounding countries when the wind's in the wrong direction as it usually is this time of year, but that doesn't stop the government doing something about the part they can and no government ever has.

It's seasonal in the provinces. The burning is over here now until the next harvesting.

Apart from by the sugar cane factories - just drive past any Mitr Phol, and they'll be smoking away until April.

Its like this across the entire country not just Bangkok.

Pollution results in the premature death of 25% of the entire Thai population.

Where's your proof for that?  Or did you mean motorcycle accidents. 😀

There's smoke from vegetation fires, whereas harmful pollution comes from industrial emissions and vehicles.

Hmm..., that reads as if you are suggesting smoke from the burning fields isn't harmful?

🤔

Bangkok and the media get their knickers in a knot so quickly! 3 hours after this article was published Bangkok was at number 63 worldwide according to IQAir. On the other hand Chiang Mai was at number 12 but no mention of this in the media.

What many ordinary folk do not bother to check is the actual source of data.  ie: a reader in cool clear-sky Sweden may be horrified at such reports yet the media have picked the very worst readings of the day to splash across headlines.

We have ~20 AQI data sites in CM city yet ONE was reading 152ppm, whilst every other station was recording between 80ppm and 152ppm.

Understanding the actual cause of 152ppm = heavy traffic hour in a dense section of the old city with narrow sois - exhaust gases mixed with road dust, very unhealthy.

Another high reading out by the Uni of 102ppm, could be from controlled burn-off of vegetation around the foothills of Doi Suthep, not dangerous to most, IMO.  Visibility is a good guide and at ~9kms today it's very good conditions around the suburbs.

Measurements of particulate matter include dust carried aloft by convection as the day warms up and when stirred by heavy traffic.  With almost 2 months of NO rain, fine dust makes up large part of the daily readings and may effect those with breathing difficulties but it's not as toxic as industrial gases.

Nono-particle measurements and gas analysis makes for a far better yardstick in determining levels of danger but it's expensive equipment.

No air quality...no breathable air. Switch to electraical vehicles and electric bikes. There has to be another way regarding the crop burning....there is...get to it!

If there is, I wish someone would explain what it is.

Same same every year. Last years winner of the air pollution charts was Chiang Mai. Obviously Humanity has a problem because if the last desaster a few month ago  is erased within such a short period of time without any change of behaviour they don't deserve any better. Forget Covid, PM2.5 is more deadly.

I don't know what your point is, but if you're suggesting ploughing the cut-offs from sugar cane and corn back in to the soil, that's not possible without making the soil infertile and doesn't happen anywhere.
