Thaiger Posted December 3, 2021 #117560 Share Posted December 3, 2021 Thailand could be legalising casinos in the near future. The House of Representatives recently voted in favour of setting up a 60-seat extraordinary committee to consider the opening of casinos, which are still illegal in Thailand. Opening the venues for gambling is expected to draw in more income from foreign tourists. 310 MPs voted in favour while 9 were against and 10 abstained. Earlier this year, PM Prayut Chan-o-cha said he would consider the legalisation of gambling. His statements came at a time where numerous Covid-19 clusters were linked to illegal gambling dens and elusive gamblers were said to be […] The story Government to set up committee to consider opening casinos in Thailand as seen on Thaiger News. HolyCowCm Posted December 3, 2021 #117563 Share Posted December 3, 2021 Bad idea. Just think of how many Chinese and Chinese mafia are going to swoop into here then. Better they just legalize prostitution on the books.
HiuMak Posted December 3, 2021 #117566 Share Posted December 3, 2021 Make all the small and underground gambling out of business and legalize it within the rich and HiSo. That's what it is

gummy Posted December 3, 2021 #117575 Share Posted December 3, 2021 Well the only democratically premier elected by this country had legalised casinos in his plans. Sure it is a centre for illegal activities as it is all over the world. Thailand is the hub of corruption so why should it lose out in this business stream ? Most of the puritanical no hopers who poo poo these ideas are non Thai so if they don't like it they should crawl back to their own countries. Yes it encourages money laundering but just think of the 10s or 100s of thousands of jobs for normal Thais it will create in the service industries. The good far outway the bad in my book. Of course Americans won't like it because they perceive it to be another encroachment of economics gain in another country but then what goes round comes round. Paco Posted December 3, 2021 #117590 Share Posted December 3, 2021 Bad idea, I remember in Cambodia at the border a large board stating come back with clothes if you want to cross the border... so imagine if they legalize it .. poor people Thai, they not ready for this at all they will fall into a hole of debt.. more crimes to get out of the hole of debt , but like stated government only cares to get profit again from foreign visitors... instead of caring their own people... sad but true once again

The non Thai opinion is worth zilch, either pro or against. Also, why would Americans care one way or another. It has nothing to do with economic encroachment, because what happens here would have zero affect to the USA. Do Americans care what happens in Cambodian casinos? As far as creating jobs, Thailand needs to import labor now because of lack of workers. If casinos attracted more high end tourism, it's OK. However, Thailand attracted many tourists pre covid. The Chinese that are the biggest forces already have Macau. It might convert underground casinos to legal places to raise taxes. Casinos do have ways of attracting unwanted crime though, that must be dealt with. In my book casinos would be low on my list for helping ordinary Thais. Encouraging industrial development and more hi tech skill development would be my preferred approach.

Pete424 Posted December 3, 2021 #117669 Share Posted December 3, 2021 Personal debt is already extremely high. Chinese tourists to gamble....Xi is putting the screws on Macau because of underground money laundering and tax evasion, then there's the illegal dens sprining up in provinces bordering Macau. I did wonder why all the attention during covid to gambling dens.....clear them out before the big boys?
