she tried to work cooperatively with the military, but as it was in Thailand, that was never going to happen. But as in Thailand, the military are designed to prosecute war, not govern a country. Their inadequacies have already been shown.

Correct! It is always about power. Also, observed Donald Trump’s actions against democracy and decided that they could get away with it. ASEAN is toothless. They will probably get away with it, but plunge their nation into rebellion and war and repression.

The lack of action (sanctions) by the world countries against Myanmar (and others in the same boat) is extremely disappointing and sends a clear message to the world - it is OK for any military to take over and suppress democracy, as long as they keep trade and business going.   Putin and Xi are laughing at the western world - our leaders are more concerned with diversity and equality than with real human rights.

I have always considered the UN to be a worthless waste of taxpayer funds. This Myanmar situation is a perfect case of both inaction and hypocrisy.   The junta of that country is still supported by China, Russia, North Korea, Cambodia and Thailand…..countries who both benefit from suppression of democracy and causes that make them look weak and ineffective.

The dictatorship is accelerating violent oppression under the name Operation Anawrahta; the military operation has received little coverage in the media. However, some examples of media coverage below which also talk to influence of geo political issues e.g. relations with China who support the dictatorship.

Personally I don't see UN having any real influence due to China having right of veto on the Security Council, additionally I do not believe there is any appetite for UN members to fund and send troops into Myanmar for peace keeping. ASEAN apparently have policy of non interference so one assumes they will mouth platitudes, but do nothing, especially the current government in Thailand.
