Thai Buddhist monks win awards for charitable work

In 1975; Parnchand, Phra Chamroon, was awarded the prestigious Magsaysay Prize for his excellent work among drug addicts. He was a former policeman who became a Buddhist monk and led fellow monks in Northeast Bangkok to help address drug addiction by setting up a unique drug treatment center that is anchored on spiritual and traditional approaches.

In 1987 another Thai monk, Ven.Kantayapiwat was awarded the Norwegian Children's Peace Prize for his many years work helping homeless children in rural areas.
