A suspect in a transnational sex trafficking case was arrested on Friday in Samut Sakhon, a province just southwest of Bangkok. The suspect allegedly promised a number of Thai women well-paying jobs in massage parlours in Dubai, but once the women were in the UAE, their passports were seized by traffickers and they were said to be forced into sex work. Thai authorities started investigating the case back in September after a Thai woman made a plea for help on social media, saying she had taken a job as a masseuse, but was forced into prostitution. Nation Thailand reported that […]

I really really really hate people like this. Give me a gun and I could easily pull the trigger even if I did not know any of the gals that we forced into this which is essentially kidnapping.

I see we you are coming from but considering this has been going on for years,  made public for years, people prosecuted for years I find it somewhat disturbing that the women, un-qualified in massage, could honestly believe it was a legitimate job prospect. I am not condoning the scum that exploit these women , rather asking the question "were the women really that naive" to go and work there ?

Some were naïve and some not, and it may have been the beatings and conditions that they did not expect.. But as far as I care, I have always hated these scum and needed to vent on it. I have never ever let my kids walk alone even going to the store, and now older my daughters are smart and would never ever consider it. But they are also world travelled and educated and supported by big daddy, their real daddy.

Doubt that they were told in advance that their passport would be taken from them, that they would not have any means of speaking to their loved ones, that their wages would be taken for inflated or made up "expenses", that they would have to do whatever the customer wanted or risked violence. Many times the trafficker uses a woman as a recruiter to establish trust.

As I said there have been many instances in the past, widely reported, so whilst you as a foreigner would not have read or heard the Thai reports, it would be surprising if Thais were not aware over the years.  Certainly the  Thai people I know and talk too are fully aware. But still these crooks rely on people who are desperate, don't ask too many questions or are simply naïve in order to ply their nasty business.

Plus it happens everywhere, not just in Thailand. Grooming etc.

You wouldn't get into a stranger's car in your home town, but go to another country only on the promise of something without researching it very well incl. setting up a safety net is perhaps not the wisest thing to do.

Then again these thugs probably know how to recruit the most likely easy victims.

Anyone with a phone can google if it is illegal to seize someones passport - it is.  The women should not have given their passport to anyone unless it was at immigration for their check.

Pursuant to your queries, detention of passport against the will of the passport holder is unlawful in the UAE. An employer cannot ask its employee to hand over the passport to keep in their custody without the employee's written consent

These people are leeches. Feeding off human misery and desperation.

The girls are often told they are going to work as a domestic at some rich Arabs house or indeed in a hotel. Its only when they arrive they find out they are now to be used as prostitutes.

The girls have their passports taken so they cannot flee. If they try going to the police for help the police take them back to their "employer" who then thanks the police with a brown envelope and gives the girl a beating.

The entire thing stinks.

Solutions? The local police forces in these countries need a right good boot up the backside. The Thai government should demand these countries take better care of its citizens. Any Thai presenting themselves at any police station must be allowed to phone the local Thai Embassy and speak to someone there. The Thai embassy should at that point should get her out of the country and pursue the police to prosecute her former "employer".

If these countries are unwilling to do this then Thailand should start curtailing the ability of people from those countries coming to Thailand.

Will that ever happen? No of course not. The elites and hiso's dont care if some poor Thai girls get smashed so long as the ability to keep making money goes on.

If children in Thailand were given a full education to grade 12 and the prospect of university, they could pursue better jobs and not fall into this. When you have only a junior education and little prospects, you do what you have to to make a living. Starvation is the alternative.

One thing I am encouraged by is the international cooperation of police agencies, to combine forces to bring to light and prosecute these crimes as well as child pornography.
