Myanmar’s opposition government has commended the ASEAN announcement that they will not invite the junta leader to the regional summit. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations said that any envoy from Myanmar should be a legitimate representative. They have opted instead to invite a non-political representative from Myanmar, in what appears to be a clear snub of the country’s military government. Myanmar’s military came to power after a coup on February 1 of this year, after they ousted the previous democratically elected government. After the junta failed to abide by a number of actions that they had agreed upon at […]

It would be nice to think that giving the bad boys Pariah status will make a difference, but I doubt it.

Still it's better than nothing.

I only hope that the international community, can bring about enough pressure on the military there to bring about a return to democratic government in Burma. This military takeover was an overstepping of the military. Their role is to serve and protect, NOT to govern and force their will on the people.

Tell that to the Thai PM and the tinpot Generals before him too.

International pressure works. News just came out of promise to release over 4,300 political detainees from Burmese prisons. Junta was gambling people lives to get a grip on legitimacy. There are thousands of activists, journalists, ordinary citizens even celebrities in prisons which Junta always denied. They have murdered a thousand of own people since February. ASEAN must stand up against inhumane treatment anywhere in region.

Well they did bugger all against the Thai General in 2010 when his men killed innocent civilians on Bangkok streets so I doubt very much whether they will do so this time against a Burmese General

A good start, however regardless of what legitimate representation is chosen to attend two key actionable decisions must be immediately implemented by ASEAN to severely impact the " Junta" government. (1) Extreme financial sanctions must be immediately executed against the the leadership of the illegal military junta . (2) Sanctions/and possibly exclusions from commercial markets in the ASEAN community for China, Russia and any other countries that financially support the Myanmar junta government. Fear of the sanctions impact on the people is presently in execution being that the Junta government has already taken civil, financial and social liberties away from the Burmese people! Other than that the meeting will be perceived as another photo op and false posturing by the participating countries and a signal to the"junta" that no one will or can hold them accountable for the mass murders and capsizing of the Myanmar legitimate government !

Good work. Finally ASEAN does something productive, and puts the welfare of people over commerce!

The pathetic despots are being held to account, by someone. It must have come as a real shock to be shunned by ASEAN. Probably the last place in the world, they expected criticism. Anything that can be done to put pressure on the billionaire street urchin creeps, is a good thing.
