Years ago my wife’s friend got sucked in on one of these scams !

She was new to the online social platforms  and was easy prey ! Being lonely and a alcoholic, made her susceptible .imop

The scammer sent pictures of himself( Van Damme) look a like and sent a gift packages via post that she would have to pay for through customs for there release but amazingly she never accepted them .Texting through  FB , over a short period, he gained her trust and eventually started sending money!

My wife told me about her new friend and the circumstances!

I asked to see the invoice of the custom bill ! The sender put a phony California address (vacant pharmacy).

I told her about my findings after seeing his pic ,invoice and research of scams using google!

She was hooked and was in denial!!

I venture to say he got into her for 200k bht!

She eventually ended up in the hospital and dying of a Pneumonia

As a rule it's mostly greed eats brain, but also lonely and gullible people are the victims. I had a very good friend many years ago. A German woman who had found herself sick and alone after she divorced her husband after he got caught in some very dirty business. One day she proudly showed me some correspondence she had with a high ranking general serving in Afghanistan. I read some of the lines and already for the poor language skills one would straight away know something was afoul. Anyway I checked on line and this person's name was used many times in a romance scam. I only feel contempt for those that exploit the loneliness and unhappiness of vulnerable people. They are the lowest of the lowest. My friend was very distraught and stressed. Not just because of the obvious scam, but also because it made herself feel gullible and stupid. But I must stress that not only stupid people seem to fall prey to this scum.
